Prostrate Knotweed (Polygonum aviculare L.)

BONAP lumps narrow-leaf knotweed (Polygonum rurivagum) and Polygonum boreale in as subspecies of this species with the corresponding epithets, and lumps oval-leaf knotweed (Polygonum arenastrum) in as ssp. depressum. We separate all three of these as species per POWO's treatment, but still recognize three subspecies: aviculare, buxiforme, and neglectum.

We have yet to build a map for this species because it is subject to so much taxonomic flux. Furthermore, BONAP's data on this species shows signs of likely errors, such as reporting ssp. aviculare in all counties of KS but no counties in OK and few adjacent counties of CO, NE, and MO; similar discrepancies exist with this species reported in all counties of UT but few adjacent counties of bordering states. This suggests the data for that species is unreliable. USDA PLANTS, which breaks down this and related taxa differently, and does not recognize any subspecies of the taxon they refer to with this name, has similar inconsistencies along many more state borders. It is likely that the data for each state was collected or reported by different individuals and/or institutions that may have used different treatments.
