This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

Habitat

Culver's root is found in a variety of habitats, usually those with high pH soils, and although it is widespread, it tends to be uncommon and scattered in much of its range, with its numbers fluctuating greatly from year to year. Natural habitats include black soil prairies, sand prairies, savannas, and openings and edges of woodlands, calcareous fens, wet meadows along rivers, rock outcroppings along rivers, and rocky bars and shores in floodplains.

It is mostly found in sunny habitats but it is sometimes found only in partial sun. It is usually found in moist to mesic conditions, but can occur on drier soils towards the shadier end of its habitat preferences. Although FSUS says it occurs in bogs, we are suspicious because bogs tend to be acidic and its other habitats reported in all other sources we consulted suggest a strong affinity for high pH soils. It can be found both on calcareous and mafic soils.
