Pale spiked lobelia occurs in a variety of sunny to partly-sunny habitats, preferring higher pH soils. Natural habitats include prairies, savannas, meadows, fens, bluffs, limestone glades, and large openings in forests. It is less common in anthropogenic habitats, but can occur in pastures, fallow fields, and along roadsides and railroads.
It tolerates a wide range of moisture conditions from moist to slightly dry, but it is more particular about soil pH, being absent from too acidic soils.
