This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is native to the Great Plains and some parts of the interior west, but has expanded its range both eastward and westward. We do not know the exact extent of its native range, and we have for now used BONAP's classification of Native vs. Adventive as a rough cutoff. In the east, it becomes progressively less common and scattered. We mark the entire new range Expanded because it spreads largely on its own, and has expanded mainly due to humans creating more disturbed, open habitats where it thrives. It is also found in Canada and Mexico, although we have yet to build these portions of its map.
↑Faunal Associations
This species was originally one of the preferred hosts of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), a beetle whose range did not overlap with the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum), but that came to prefer cultivated potatoes as host.
