Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This weedy plant favors open, barren sites; its native range was originally limited to the west, but it has expanded greatly in the east owing to humans creating more open habitats that it prefers. It is less common in the southeast, probably because of its preference for alkaline soils.
