This grass is native to western North America, its native range extending farther east in the north. It seeds prolifically, thriving in anthropogenic habitats with poor drainage and compacted soil, and it can also tolerate some salt. It has expanded greatly eastward and southward, taking advantage of cropland and pastureland, vacant lots, industrial areas, roads, and railroads.
