Found in rich woods in mesic to dry-mesic conditions, including oak-hickory forest, mixed pine-hardwood forests, and rich mesic forests on steep, shaded ravines, including on calcareous slopes. Also found on locally well-drained sites in bottomland woods. Usually found on sites with well-developed soils and abundant leaf litter, but tolerates a wide range of soil pH.
