Red-Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea L.)

Also known as red osier, redosier dogwood; also classified as Swida sericea (L.) Holub, Cornus stolonifera Michx., Cornus alba subsp. stolonifera (Michx.) Wangerin, Cornus alba var. alba (Non-standard Usage).

BONAP lists this species as a variety of Tatarian dogwood (Cornus alba), as equivalent to Cornus alba var. alba, a non-standard practice that we were unable to find any documentation explaining. We also failed to find any other sources following a similar treatment. As such, we link to BONAP's map of this name, but do not list this name as an accepted synonym. Most authorities, including POWO, consider Cornus alba L. a species limited to eastern Europe, east through Siberia to east Asia, and only occurring in North America as an introduction if at all, and we follow this treatment. POWO does not recognize any sub-taxa of either C. sericea or C. alba, but BONAP splits their C. alba into two varieties, C. alba var. alba and C. alba var. occidentalis. But POWO considers C. alba var. occidentalis a synonym of Cornus torreyi S.Watson.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
