↑Description & Identification

Deciduous, but can be opportunistically semi-evergreen in warmer and more sheltered conditions towards the southern end of its range.

↑Habitat

Naturally found in moist conditions but can tolerate a wide range of conditions. Tolerates both acidic and alkaline soils, shallow standing water, and some drought.

Found mostly in wetlands: moist bottomland forests and riparian areas, swamps, low-lying pine barrens.

↑Uses

Planted as a landscaping plant due to its compact form and small size at maturity, tolerance of urban conditions, and attractive flowers and fall foliage color. Able to be cultivated on much drier sites than it occurs in the wild.
