This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is native to the southeastern US, but it is now found considerably north and west of its native range. Many of these new populations originated from garden escapes, but this plant is also weedy and able to spread on its own. We have marked most of the eastern populations as Expanded, as this plant seems to be expanding contiguously with its native range, even if aided by garden escapes. However, we have marked western populations as Introduced because they have been introduced across geographic divides in which this species does not occur. Some populations, such as those in the Dakotas and eastern New Mexico, represented a tough judgment call and could have easily been classified differently.
