This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Habitat

Found on a wide variety of sites, and absent only from the wettest, driest, and most acidic sites. However, most common on calcium-rich soils. Found on richer sites in oak forests. Usually found growing in part shade, but can be found on moister sites in full sun. Also grows on exposed limestone hillsides and cliffs, often together with eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana).

Often found growing together with flowering dogwood (Cornus florida).
