↑Habitat
Found in a variety of open habitats including prairies, meadows, savannas, open woods, limestone barrens, and clearings and edges in forests. Also found in anthropogenic habitats including areas along roadsides and railroads, and small forest fragments. In the northeast of its range it is common on shores of rivers and lakes.
Prefers fertile soil with a loam to clay-loam texture, and thrives on neutral to high pH soils. Found in a range of moisture conditions from moist to dry-mesic, but absent from poorly-drained or very dry sites. Tolerates competition from plants that grow primarily during the summer months, but requires more direct sunlight in spring. Its growth habit allows it to thrive in areas where soil fertility is spotty, such as where rocks are interspersed with pockets of fertile soil.
↑Uses
This species is occasionally, and increasingly, used as a groundcover, where it is valued for its ease of growing in gardens, attractive foliage and blooms, low maximum height, edible fruit, deer resistance, and support of other wildlife.
This species is one of the parent plants of the garden strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa), a hybrid of this with beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis).
